A few weeks ago, we posted one graduate’s reflections on the high price of attending her first-choice school. That got you guys talking, so we thought we’d follow up with this article showing that more and more students are picking their second- and third-choice schools. The big reason, not surprisingly, seems to be the price tag.
Did you get into your first-choice school but end up someplace more affordable? Let’s hear about in the comments section.
There's more to it than just getting hired based on your school's reputation. Your school's career center, advisors and alumni network all play a part. So, in fact, a good school may be important but not in the way the article mentions.
That's me - I was accepted at MIT, and considered that my top choice until I began to understand what $36k/year REALLY meant for my future...even at age 18. I was offered a $27k scholarship to the University of Minnesota, my second choice, and that became a no brainer to me.
I know attending school at MIT would have been a wonderful, challenging, life-altering experience, but I just could not justify that debt. Years later and debt-free, I'm grateful. But - to each their own - if I weren't so cheap maybe I would have attended MIT and become a genius! :)
The obvious question is why? I'm an IT manager for a major managed care company and I've read hundreds of resumes and hired many people as software developers, business analysts and project managers. These positions pay between $70-100k and I've seldom given any thought to the school the candidate attended.
A good school name may help with the first job but after that hiring mgrs are more interested in the person, how they present themselves, how well they communicate and what they've done recently. I can usually tell in the first 5 minutes if there's any chance that the person I'm interviewing will work out.
I attended a state school and could never figure out why someone would attend a school where the cost to attend 1 year was as much or more than they'd earn in a year with the degree they received.
Just my $.02, your mileage may vary.
I can't pull up the story?! It seems to almost be the story of my life - except for I am paying the high price! Let me know. Thanks
