New Year’s resolutions tend to fizzle out by the time Valentine’s Day rolls around. If you plan to add saving more money as a resolution this year, below are some tips from MSNBC Money to help you make your resolution a success in 2008 and beyond:
Do some spring cleaning – What are you paying for each month? Cancel any unused gym memberships, magazine subscriptions you don’t need or other expenses like lottery tickets.
Give yourself an allowance – Savings are in vogue in 2008. Next time you pay the bills, set aside some funds for yourself. Even if it’s just $20, every penny counts.
Outsmart credit card debt – If you have credit card debt, one way to start digging yourself out is to transfer the balance to a lower-interest credit card. You’ll save hundreds of dollars on interest charges and will be able to pay off the debt quicker.
Relocate from Marlboro Country – Want to save as much as $2,000 this year? Quit smoking.
Audit yourself – The best strategy to find ways to save money in 2008 is to examine your spending in 2007. How much did you spend on that coffeehouse latte this year? Maybe brewing your own coffee at home should become one of your resolutions.
